Review:

“Allen co-wrote, directed and stars” FS in this “semi-autobiographical film about his union with Diane Keaton” VD The film marked “the fourth pairing of Keaton and Allen, who were also an off-screen couple at the time.” FS “Many consider this Allen’s best work, and a transition from his earlier absurdist comedies to a richer, more thoughtful consideration of relationships” FS and their “trials and tribulations.” VD “It’s certainly Allen’s sweetest.” TV It is a “bittersweet, cerebral, stream-of-consciousness, 70s, urban romantic comedy” FS which is “innovatively filmed” FS with“fantasy flashbacks, direct-camera monologues, subtitles and even a cartoon sequence.” TV

Alvy Singer (Allen) is a Jewish “kvetchy, neurotic, Brooklyn stand-up comedian…wistfully recalling his bygone relationship” FS with Annie Hall (Keaton). The aspiring singer is “flighty, adorable, and irrepressibly Midwestern” FS WASP – “his polar opposite.” A07 “They invariably attempt to change each other, causing friction and their eventual split.” FS

The comedy was “crammed with cameos from Paul Simon, Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Walken, Carol Kane, Sigourney Weaver, and others.” VD It “also launched a women’s fashion trend based on Annie Hall’s” A98 “baggy pants, vest, hat and tie look.” TV

“Sparring against Star Wars, even some on the team of Annie Hall believed it would lose out to the sci-fi/adventure blockbuster. But win it did, taking home four Oscars in total. Movie critic Roger Ebert noted in 2002 that this film has ‘more intellectual wit and cultural references than any other movie ever to win the Oscar for best picture.’” MSN This “deft and dazzling comic creation” RS “ranks among the best comedies ever filmed.” TV
