  1. Because of the score alone, South Pacific MUST be on this list. The movie with its tricky filters was a bit of an experiment at the time. But it was based on the beloved Broadway play that went on and on for years. The movie version successfully features the two love stories, and barely hidden racism against the background of a deadly war in exotic Oceania. A few light interludes give much needed comic relief. But the story is designed to wrench the heart. Mission Accomplished.
