Review:

“One of the most-popular, appealing, beguilingly star-driven, tragi-comedy Westerns ever made.” FS Goldman’s “witty script” FS is “loosely based” FS on the real-life “charming, turn-of-the-century, train-robbing outlaws” FS and “early 1900’s anti-heroes” FS “Robert Leroy Parker (Butch Cassidy) and Harry Longbaugh (The Sundance Kid) and the Hole in the Wall gang.” FS

“One of the screen’s great buddy teams was born when Paul Newman and Robert Redford saddled up for this rollicking comic western about two legendary outlaws.” TV As the “two handsome leads,” FS they “redefined the buddy movie” A07 with their chemistry. “With a gleam in his baby blues, Newman dazzles as Butch, while Redford became a superstar with his self-deprecating portrayal of the dashing, trigger-happy Sundance.” TV

The story follows the “free-wheeling, non-chalant Butch (Newman) and sharpshooting Sundance (Redford)” FS from the Old West to “their final confrontation in South America.” VD After they “bungle their second attempt on the Union Pacific Express…[they] are relentlessly pursued by authorities in a posse. With Sundance’s beautiful, school-teacher lover Etta Place (Ross), they flee to Bolivia to seek further wealth. In the end, they are outnumbered and die in a blazing, hail of bullets, freeze-frame shootout, reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde.” FS

“The movie’s key song ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head’ is a fun counterpart to the actual plight of our friends.” A07 The song is featured during a light-hearted scene where Butch takes Etta on a bicycle ride.

Buzznet: Movies That Are Considered to Be Almost Flawless

Originally posted 8/12/2019.

Almost flawless? That definitely doesn’t describe this article. “Movies That Are Considered Flawless.” By whom? The suggestion is that some kind of consensus has been achieved in selected the movies presented here. However, this article – while not credited to anyone – clearly is an individual fan’s personal favorites. That makes sense considering that Buzznet is a social media platform allowing members to share content. I have no problem with personal lists and consider it a low blow to tell someone his or her tastes are wrong. If it is a personal list, though, OWN IT.

As if to muster credibility, a handful of classics like Jaws, Vertigo, West Side Story, and 2001: A Space Odyssey are thrown in alongside a list of mostly 21st-century films that are far from universal classics. While putting together best-of lists is a very subjective thing, it is telling that this list offers titles like Silence and You Were Never Really Here which have appeared on exactly zero other lists compiled by Dave’s Movie Database.

Actually, this isn’t a list, but a hastily assembled and poorly edited article. How else do you explain Her and You Were Never Really Here each showing up TWICE? The article also presents 38 movies (why 38? I have no idea) in an unranked, nonchronological, seemingly random order.

Nonetheless, this “list” has been presented as a curiosity with the films listed in order of ranking by Dave’s Movie Database.

Rotten Tomatoes: Top 100 Movies

Originally posted 7/31/2019.

Rotten Tomatoes may be the most famous movie review site in the world. They aggregate reviews from multiple sources and movies get a score from 0 to 100% based on how many of those reviews are positive.

They also rate the top movies of all time, but those lists are neither a straight rundown of movies scoring the best nor are they reflections of those movies receiving the most reviews. One would assume as that list is updated, the changes would merely reflect the inclusion of a few newer titles, but the lists have varied widely over the years (for example, see the lists referenced in the resources at the bottom of the page). Also, Rotten Tomatoes annoyingly updates their “Top 100 Movies of All Time” list without indicating any dates of revisions.

Rotten Tomatoes also puts out a list of the “200 Essential Movies to Watch Now” which is put together by their editorial staff, seemingly not driven by how the movies have been rated on the site. Again, they frustratingly don’t bother to post dates to show when this list was posted. I have found a couple of those lists which I’ve factored into the mix.

With all that in mind, Dave’s Movie Database assembled its own Rotten Tomatoes list by averaging three lists from over the years along with a ranking of the 300+ movies to have received 100% ratings over the years. Here are the results:

    Review:

This is a movie that was “designed to be the most blockbuster of all the blockbusters.” BT “It’s an epic cultural event” BT about “rewarding commitment, fandom, and expectations.” BT It features “familiar faces from over 20 other movies.” BT It “elevates its most iconic heroes to the legendary status they deserve.” BT “It’s hard to see serious MCU fans walking away from this disappointed…It’s a satisfying end to a chapter…that will be hard to top for pure spectacle.” BT

The story picks up where 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War left off: the villain Thanos got all six of the Infinity Stones and used them to “wipe out half of existence, including beloved heroes like Black Panther, Star-Lord, and Spider-Man.” BT The remaining heroes are left to find a way to reverse the destruction wrought by Thanos.

This is “a more focused piece than Infinity War…It’s a more patient, focused film, even as its plot draws in elements of a dozen other movies.” BT There is “a sense of looking back instead of merely tring to set the table for something to come.” BT It revisits the charm of the first Avengers movie “in which strong personalities were allowed to bounce off each other instead of just feeling like they were strapped into a rollercoaster headed in the same direction.” BT

“It also allows space for some of the best acting work in the franchise, particularly from Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.” BT as Captain America and Iron Man respectively. Endgame “provides the MCU’s two most popular heroes the story arc they deserve instead of just drowning them in a sea of cameos.” BT
