Top 25 Epic Movies

Wikipedia defines an epic film as “a style of filmmaking with large scale, sweeping scope, and spectacle…It is often focused on a heroic character…[They may] take a historical or a mythical event and add an extravagant setting and lavish costumes, accompanied by an expansive musical score with an ensemble cast, which would make them among the most expensive of films to produce.”

This list of the top 25 epic films of all-time has been assembled by aggregating the resources at the bottom of this page along with overall ranking in Dave’s Movie Database. Movies with sequels that also rated in the top 50 have been consolidated into one entry.

Ultimate Movie Rankings: Top 100 Movies

The website says UltimateMovieRankings.com has rated more than 20,000 movies, each with a minimum of five sources, such as the Internet Movie Database, Rotten Tomatoes, and MetaCritic. The site published its list of best review movies in 2015 (article isn’t dated, but that’s when the earliest comments on the post appear).

In 2018 (again, based on comments since article isn’t dated), the site published a list of the top 100 movies and factored box office and awards in as well as ratings.

Review:

This “sweeping, breath-taking, cinematic” FS “blockbuster biography of enigmatic adventurer T.E. Lawrence is that rarity, an epic film that is also literate.” LM “One of the greatest films of all time,” FS it is “staggering in its scope, execution and impact” BFI and “remains a moving and memorable film-going experience.” BFI

The story, which is based on Lawrence’s book The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, “follows the true-life exploits of…T. E. Lawrence…and his transformation from an enigmatic eccentric to a hero.” FS During World War I, “the complex, English military leader” VD “comes to believe he can give Arabia back to the Arabs.” A07 He “courageously unites the warring Arab fractions into a guerrilla front” FS “to fight alongside the British against the Turks in the 1914-17 campaign.” BFI

Lawrence is “played with charismatic brilliance by 30 year-old Peter O’Toole.” BFI In his Oscar-nominated performance in his first leading role in his first major film, he became “an instant star.” LM The movie also “introduced Sharif to an international audience.” A07 In a film “full of scenes and performances to treasure…perhaps the best remembered is the arrival at the isolated well of Sherif Ali (Omar Sharif) and the long shot of his ride across the shimmering sand.” BFI

The “sumptuous desert imagery” T98 was as much a star as the actors. The movie is “stunning in its scope with absolutely awesome” VD and “rich cinematography of the immense” FS and “shifting desert so superbly photographed in glorious 70mm by Freddie Young.” BFI

The Mr. Showbiz site, which Filmsite.org called, “one of the Web’s earliest providers of entertainment and celebrity news and information,” was established in 1995 and ceased in 2001. In 1997, the site published two lists – one ranked the top 100 movies based on critics and the other on readers. Here the two lists have been aggregated to create a single top 100 list. Note: the top 50 movies appeared on both lists.

Filmsite.org/Tim Dirks' “100 Greatest Films”

Filmsite.org:

100 Greatest Films

The Filmsite.org website doesn’t offer much explanation as to how these films were selected, other than to say that “there is reasonable consensus by most film historians, critics and reviewers that these selections are among cinema’s most critically acclaimed, significant ‘must-see’ films (of predominantly Hollywood-American production).” It also notes that the focus was on English-language films. One can click on the movie titles at Filmsite.org for detailed reviews.

The site was created in 1996 by Tim Dirks. He also published his own list of “The Greatest 100 Movies of All Time,” a list no longer available online. The lists are nearly identical. The primary difference is that the Filmsite.org list is presented in alphabetical order while Dirks’ list is ranked. There is no indication when either list was published, but the most recent title on the Filmsite.org list is 1993’s Schindler’s List while Dirks’ list includes a pair of 1994 releases (The Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction). With so little variation between the two lists, this is a consolidation of the two lists with Dirks’ rankings. Films only appearing on one list or the other are noted:
