Films 101: "The 100 Best Movies of All Time"

Films 101:

The 100 Best Movies of All Time

The home page for Films101.com says, “the best movies of all time, picked by critics and filmmakers.” On their about page, it offers slightly more detail, saying that the Films 101 database “comes from all-time best movie lists and movie awards.” There’s no indication when the list was initially posted and how often or when it has been updated but the most recent movies in their top 1000 are from 2024.

The website also offers ratings (again, with no explanation of where they come from), yearly top tens, and links for blockbusters, award winners, foreign films, genres, and more.

Turin University: “The Most Influential Films of All Time”

University of Turin:

The Most Influential Films of All Time

A team of researchers from Italy’s University of Turin developed an algorithm for measuring the influence of more than 47,000 movies. They used the Internet Movie Database to search for which films were most referenced. The study was published in the Applied Network Science journal.

In 2002, the National Society of Film Critics published the book The A List: The National Society of Film Critics' 100 Essential Films (edited by Jay Carr). The list was unranked but has been ranked here according to the films’ overall status in Dave’s Movie Database.

Movieline Magazine launched in 1985, went national in 1989, and closed shop in 2009. In their December 1995 issue, they selected, as said at Filmsite.org, “100 of the all-time greatest English-language films - actually 101. The semi-serious article was written by Virginia Campbell and Edward Margulies, who admitted that they included one by Martin Scorsese and one by D.W. Griffith, but they compensated for that by not including any films by David Lean or Mike Nichols.” Note: the original list was unranked. The movies have been ranked here based on their overall standing in Dave’s Movie Database. Also, the list actually included 102 movies, not 100.
